Fellini Through the Years

In honor of our upcoming of screening of Federico Fellini’s Oscar-winning Amarcord, which will be shown as part of “Passing Beauty: A Conversation with Hou Hsiao-hsien” on October 13th, we thought we’d share some little-seen images of the Italian auteur throughout his career.  All the photos are courtesy the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library.

Fellini, back in the early 1940s, as he was transitioning from illustrator to vaudevillian to screenwriter – collaborating on Roberto Rossellini’s script of OPEN CITY (1945).

directing Nights of Cabiria
Fellini directs his wife Giulietta Masina and Amedeo Nazzari in NIGHTS OF CABIRIA (1956).

29th Academy Awards
Giulietta Masina and Federico Fellini at the 29th Academy Awards ceremony in 1957, where LA STRADA would win the Academy Award for Foreign Language film. Three subsequent Fellini films would go on to win Oscars for foreign language film: NIGHTS OF CABIRIA (1956), 8 ½ (1963) and AMARCORD (1974).

36th Academy Awards
