Director Sergio Leone concluded his “Man with No Name” trilogy with this epic Western, which features one of Ennio Morricone’s most popular and indelible scores. Clint Eastwood plays a gunslinger nicknamed Blondie (“The Good”) whose hunt for a hidden fortune in gold brings him into continually shifting alliances with mercenary Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef, “The Bad”) and outlaw Tuco (Eli Wallach, “The Ugly”), leading to a series of escalating double- and triple-crosses that send our three antiheroes across the barren landscape of Civil War-era America.

Leone’s vivid widescreen images, stunningly achieved by cinematographer Tonino Delli Colli, encompass panoramic vistas as well as the tightest of closeups, and Morricone’s score features not only his instantly recognizable main theme, but also the euphoric “The Ecstasy of Gold.”

1966, 161 minutes, color | Written by Luciano Vincenzoni, Sergio Leone; directed by Leone; with Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef, Aldo Giuffre, Chelo Alonso, Mario Brega.
