Families with children ages 7-13 gathered at the Pickford Center, where they spent the first part of the program engaging in a hands-on workshop that demonstrated the art of production design and set decoration, and how these impact the tone of a movie.

Children interacted with motion picture production designers and set decorators and learned how to build their own small sets, working from a script. Children discovered how set decorators, an essential part of the production design team, add the details that make the film's environments look and feel real for both the actors and, later, the audience.

After a short break, families and the general public were invited into our Linwood Dunn Theater for a discussion about “The Art of Production Design,” focusing on The Spiderwick Chronicles. Hosted by Rosemary Brandenburg, Production Designer Jim Bissell, Set Decorator Jan Pascale and Art Director Christa Munro discussed the tremendous attention to detail that this craft brings to a movie set.

Given this new appreciation and understanding of the art of Production Design, we watched a screening of The Spiderwick Chronicles.
